International Open Access Week

Welcome to International Open Access Week, October 20-26th 2025!

This annual event is a global celebration dedicated to promoting Open Access (OA) in research and scholarship. OA is a publishing movement aimed at making research freely available online. When research is fully OA, it is free for the public to access, read, download, copy, share, or use for any other lawful purpose. OA Week is an opportunity to take action and raise awareness around the importance of community control of knowledge sharing systems.

Find out more about Open Access Publishing at CQU.

Events

Expand your Open Access knowledge by attending:

  • Open Access at CQU on Tuesday 21st October at 11am AEST; an online practical session by the Library and Office of Research. The session will cover Open Access options at CQU, including how to freely share your research publications, avoid Open Access publishing costs, and use Open Educational Resources in your teaching.
  • Open Access Australasia sessions throughout the week

Further Information

If you are seeking to publish Open Access through a journal, you may be eligible to avoid paying the Article Processing Charges (APC). For more information check out the Library's Read and Publish agreements page.

Published open data benefits our communities by creating opportunities and collaboration between researchers to build upon the results of previous research, reducing the cost of duplication. More information is available on Managing research data at CQU.

Before Submission

  • Check the publisher's self-archiving policy to ensure you can deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in aCQUIRe. An AAM is the final author-created version of the manuscript, which includes any changes made after peer-review and has been accepted for publication by the journal, but before the publisher's final copy, editing, page numbering, typesetting, and formatting.

At Submission

  • Include a rights retention statement on your submitted manuscript. This is often included in the funder and acknowledgements section.

On Acceptance

  • Keep a copy of the Author Accepted Manuscript.
  • Check the article proofs to see if the rights retention statement has been included.
  • Read the publishing agreement before you sign it and keep a copy for your records.

Australian funding institutions such the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) mandate that funded research be made open, which prioritises the best interests of both the public and the academic community.
